Conductor/Teaching Artist


In addition to all her vocal work, Karen is a sought after educator, teaching artist, and music director. In her over two decades of experience, she has been a teaching artist for the LA Opera Connects department for numerous programs. She is the music director for their annual Opera Camp, and has been Chorus master for many in-school productions, as well as the Voices for Tolerance Project.

It has always been a passion for Karen to promote gender equity in classical music, and to that end, she has recently started HERS: an innovative, collaborative music ensemble, dedicated to the empowerment and inspiration of women artists.

Karen has also been a teaching artist for the LA Master Chorale’s Voices Within – a song writing workshop for LAUSD students, and has organized countless community singalong events for The Music Center of Los Angeles’ Active Arts events. She has worked for other outreach organizations such as The Boys and Girls Club of Pasadena, and Five Acres. Karen also has taught private voice lessons for 20 plus years, and has been on the vocal faculty for Pomona College, Cal Poly Pomona, and is currently adjunct professor at Occidental College.


She holds a Bachelor of Music degree (Summa Cum Laude) in Music Education and a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Arizona, as well as training in OperaWorks’ Advanced Artist Program, and has also studied Alexander Technique extensively. She currently resides in northeast Los Angeles with her husband son and precocious dog.
